]]>From Carmel and Calvin’s roller skate extravaganza to Beth and Kirk’s 80s inspired ceremony, the Royal Station Hotel have revealed how wedding traditions have changed throughout the years from one soap to the next.
Since the launch of its first-ever episode on 19th February 1985, it’s fair to say the nation has fallen in love with EastEnders and all the drama it entails – with wedding ceremonies being a sight to see. Dating back to 1986, we saw Lofty and Michelle tie the knot at the altar. As far as a traditional British wedding goes, the ceremony reflected exactly this. Michelle was seen wearing an elegant white wedding dress, flattered with a veil, bridal bouquet, and headpiece to finish off the look. As for Lofty, he modelled a grey two-piece suit. From the stag and hen night celebration to the choosing of the bridesmaids and best man, this wedding involved everything that a traditional British ceremony connotes.
Fast forward to 1995 where Phil and Kathy got hitched in secret and we started to see a move away from a traditional wedding service. Rather than hosting a ceremony with all their friends and family at a church, riding in on a horse and cart, and having her dad walk her down the aisle, they opted for a quieter service at what appears to be a registry office with only a few witnesses. Not only that, the choice of clothing attire steers away from the traditional go-to as well, with Kathy seen wearing a more casual long dress with a scarf and a cashmere coat.
The latest wedding event that EastEnders presented to the nation was Stuart and Rainie’s wedding that took a rather humourous turn of events. What was intended to be a traditional British wedding was disrupted by modern technology – the car broke down and locked the groom inside! This didn’t stop the ceremony taking place though. It just took place in the middle of the road while the bride and groom spoke their vows through the car window – how’s that for romance?
Despite the wedding ceremonies themselves changing throughout the years, one thing that remains persistent is a trip to the infamous Queen Vic for an after-party celebration.
Renowned for being the longest-running soap opera in the world, Coronation Street has seen 110 wedding ceremonies take place, with many adding their own quirky twist to the event itself. From Alec and Bet’s wedding wish to take over the Rover’s Return in the late 80s, to Steve McDonald’s abundance of wedding events, Coronation Street has since then seen a move away from a traditional British wedding.
Take Beth and Kirk’s 80s-themed ceremony. This saw the couple tie the knot dressed in 80s style apparel including neon leg warmers, over-the-top hair volumes, and floral printed collars. Inspired by Madonna’s 80s hit ‘Like a Virgin’ and Adam Ant’s charismatic outfit and makeup choices, the two revolved their wedding outfits around everything the 80s had to offer.
But before Kirk and Beth brought the 80s into the 21st century, we saw Joan and Gordon Davies host the soap’s very first street wedding back in 1961. Moving away from the traditions of a British ceremony, the two replaced a church for the outdoors, and an aisle with a road.
Considered to be one of the more recent programmes to be aired, Hollyoaks was first introduced into the soap opera world back in 1995 and has since then hosted many rather dramatic, and tragic wedding ceremonies. Despite Hollyoaks being renowned for hosting some of the most shocking wedding scenes the UK nation could possibly imagine, these ceremonies are a milestone away from being traditionally British.
In 2008, Hollyoaks stars Carmel and Calvin tied the rather unstable knot – in every sense of the word. Despite Carmel keeping up the tradition of a white flowing wedding dress, she ditched the heels for a pair of roller skates and wheeled her ways down the aisle. As for Calvin, he opted for a traditional copper’s uniform over a conventional suit and tie.
Since then, Hollyoaks have seen Tony and Cindy along with Doug and Ste tie the knot back in 2012. Although the day itself captured everything that a traditional British wedding entails, the two couples decided to share their special day together and host a double wedding. Why not share your day with your best friend?
Fast forward to 2014 and Porsche and Lockie chose to host their wedding reception on a train! Decorated with a cute and cosy aesthetic of fairy lights, draped curtains, and mismatched décor, the train was made to look like the perfect backdrop for a wedding to take place.
It’s fair to say that soap operas have provided the nation with an abundance of wedding ceremonies over the years – some traditional and some embracing the diversity this century has to offer. Whether you prefer an old-school take for your wedding and opt for a Brighton wedding venue to set the scene or want to add your own unique twist, soap operas are a gold mine when it comes to wedding ceremony inspiration.

]]>The post The Most Romantic Car Scenes from the Big Screen appeared first on Live Theatre UK.
]]>Hollywood have, for so many years, used this situation to create an environment full of tension which makes for undeniably great viewing. One of the most common features we see on the big screen is two love interests gazing into one another’s eyes lovingly or, perhaps, just with lust — either way, we’re an absolute sucker for it!
That got us thinking; what are the greatest cinema romance scenes that take place in a car? To find out, Grange scoured the depths of the internet and bring you some of the most touch-and-go (to a lesser extent) moments between two sweethearts, using Rotten Tomatoes rankings to detail your absolute favourites.
Starring: Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 55%
Who would ever go as far as doubting that Dear John would fail to feature on this list? Considering it’s one of the biggest tear-jerking romance movies that has ever graced the big screen, its inclusion was almost guaranteed.
This isn’t a steamy sex scene, far from it in fact — it is something that you could watch with your grandmother on a Sunday afternoon.
The story follows American soldier John as he returns from service, meeting college student Savannah. The two click almost instantly, but upon meeting John’s father, Savannah points to the fact she believes he may be suffering from autism, something John appears oblivious to.
As John drops her home in his Lincoln Town Car, Savannah mentions that she likes his father and she knows that he loves John. She leans in and pecks John on the cheek before getting out of the car, causing him to bite the bullet and ask whether he’ll be seeing her again.
For those who know the rest, you’ll understand the significance of that one small kiss.
Starring: Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 37%
The third and final movie adaptation in E.L. James’ Fifty Shades trilogy follows Mr Grey and Anastasia as they begin to negotiate married life. The two are convinced that they have left their pasts behind as they look to settle down and explore what a monogynous life has in store. Unfortunately, this isn’t quite what happens, but we’ll not go as far as delivering that spoiler for you.
Cutting to the chase, quite literally, the couple realise they are being followed and a car chase develops, with Christian asking his wife to show off her driving capabilities.
Viewers watch on as Ana controls her Audi R8 in a fashion that the Stig would be proud off, perfectly manipulating any apex which comes her way.
As they grind to a halt, Ana begins to kiss Christian before reaching for his belt buckle, only to be reminded by her husband that they are in a car park — of course that wasn’t to stop them…
Starring: Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 69%
This film features on our list not only as one of the most romantic car scenes of all time, but as one of the greatest movies to have ever been created.
James Cameron’s 1997 film follows the story of aristocrat Rose and artist Jack, who fall in love as the world-famous passenger line began to sink in 1912.
Quite remarkably, the only motor vehicle to be aboard the Titanic on its maiden voyage was a Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville, something which Jack and Rose in the film take full advantage off.
After walking hand in hand through the lower decks of the ship, the two stumble across the classic vehicle and climb into the back.
The cameras cutaway but on their return viewers are presented with a mass of very steamy windows, leaving little to the imagination. This will, undoubtedly, go down as one of the most romantic movie scenes of all time.
Starring: Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 79%
After watching this 2011 film you will quickly understand why it went on to receive a standing ovation after its first showing at the Cannes International Film Festival.
Driver, as the character is known as, plays the role of a garage mechanic, stunt man, and getaway driver. But alongside his passion for all things fast he begins to develop feelings for the beautiful Irene.
On their first encounter, after leaving her car in for repairs, Driver’s boss suggests that he drop both Irene and her young son home. Driver rarely speaks throughout the entirety of the film but when he does, he does so monosyllabically and with dulcet tones. He turns to Irene and asks, “Wanna see something?”
What follows is not lust, not even a kiss, it is simply a beautiful moment between a man and a woman in 1973 Chevy Malibu. This moment pinpoints a rollercoaster romance.
Starring: Ansel Elgort and Lily James
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 89%
Baby, the main character in this 2017 movie, has sailed through life thanks to his unrivalled ability behind the wheel. He does, in most parts, use this incredible skill to assist in heists and robberies. But, after meeting Debora, he wants to leave this world of criminality behind in exchange for settling down.
The romantic scene comes in the form of Debora asking Baby to come in for a coffee, noting that he can tell her anything, to which he responds, “You’re the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time!”
Debora leans over, places the palm of her hand gently on Baby’s cheek, caressing his face, and kissing him. Of course, it wasn’t all a fairy-tale story of romance considering Baby had actually stolen the 1986 Chevrolet Caprice they were sat in from an elderly woman…
It’s safe to say that we are all easily won over by a romantic scene that takes place in a car. But as we’ve noted, it doesn’t have to be an X-rated scene to grab our attention!

]]>The post Why do Only 30 Per Cent of Top 400 Richest Have Social Media? appeared first on Live Theatre UK.
]]>But, from a recent study by CT Shirts, it has become apparent that not using social media is more popular than you’d think among the richest people in the world.
CT Shirts collated data for the top 400 on the world’s rich list and found that 70 per cent of this group are absent from social media completely. Furthermore, 55 per cent of the top 20 are social media-phobes — veering away from Facebook and the likes.
Why is it though that such an empowering platform as social media is avoided by incredibly successful individuals and does it play a role in their triumph? Here, we look at whether or not this is the case.
Anyone who is anyone in the business world will be more than happy to tell you that they never have any time — their schedule is constantly full. Well, this isn’t technically true, rather they are clever at managing their time and don’t waste it on futile tasks.
If something is going to take up their day, they need to be getting something out of it, otherwise it’s not benefiting them.
The average UK internet user spends 39 minutes each day on social media — this amounts to more than four and a half hours a week.
Successful people will also tend to focus much of their attention on exercise and self-improvement. We are recommended to complete more than 30-minutes of moderate to physical everyday —take that time you’d use on social media and apply it to a workout, whether that be physical or even mental.
The ultra-successful place an emphasis on keeping themselves healthy — if you aren’t fit you can’t work. Despite a plethora of research on the long-term impacts of social media not existing, there are studies which link social media to negative health.
From the fear of missing out (FOMO) to feeling inadequate about yourself, social media has been linked to causing anxiety, depression, loneliness, and even suicidal thoughts.
By avoiding social media, the 70 per cent of the rich list are able to detach themselves from unnecessary negativity and focus instead on their overarching goals.
In reality, how often do we read positive stories on social media? It can often just be a platform for people to voice their biggest stresses and frustrations. Reading this will, undoubtedly, impact you in a negative way rather than give you get you into that positive mindset essential for growth and development.
Who can recall that ICT lesson at school when we were all warned that as soon as something is posted online, it is there to stay? Well, things haven’t changed.
Slipping up on social media can be particularly easy, whether that be posting a picture of you having one too many with your friends at the weekend or airing your dirty laundry or rather unpopular opinions.
Even if you delete it, the internet has it forever. We’ve seen this happen to a number of celebrities in recent years, with stuff of yesteryear cropping up and coming back to bite them. Take the Abercrombie and Fitch CEO as a prime example. The clothing brands once-CEO said he “only wanted popular, beautiful people wearing his clothes.” Unsurprisingly, sales took a hit and dropped by 15 per cent.
If you aren’t on social media, then you can’t do anything wrong! Social media can be an incredibly productive tool and sometimes provide a much-needed rest from the rat race that is modern life but if you’re going to use it, be in control!

]]>In 2020 and 2021, however, it hasn’t all been about sticking to your home-workout regime, keeping your house tidy, growing vegetables in your garden, zoom quizzes and having the odd pamper night. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve been digging a little deeper. There’s an emphasis on self-acceptance and finding joy in oneself, rather than constantly striving to achieve more. The proof is in the book searches. The four self-care books that have enjoyed the most dramatic increase in search volumes over 2020 were:
Each of them serves their own unique purpose. Read on to find the perfect self-care book for you, depending on what you’re striving for in life.
With an incredible search volume of 12,100 in 2020, Florence Given’s Women Don’t Owe You Pretty has made waves thanks to its fun, down-to-earth presentation of the feminist agenda. The Insta-worthy book set a whole new generation on to the ideals of female empowerment through eye-catching colours, quirky illustrations, and a relatable narrative style.
The over-arching message of this particular self-help book is that you are already enough, and do not need a partner to complete you. If you’re having a confidence crisis, which many of us have fallen into during the pandemic, you’re sure to feel a boost after reading this book – you’ll know your infinite self-worth in no time!
Holly Whitaker’s Quit Like a Woman saw a 1,375% increase in searches between 2019 and 2020. This book focuses on breaking the barriers of what is expected of a woman in modern society and offers great advice when it comes to living by your own rules.
Reflecting on her own journey of giving up alcohol for good, in a society fuelled by drinking culture, Whitaker – founder of the first female-focused recovery program – lays out a roadmap for anyone who wants to quit drinking for good. Thanks to her witty and relatable narrative, the book serves as an invaluable source of advice.
The Gift of Forgiveness proved to be another hugely successful book of 2020, with a search increase of 950% from the previous year. This moving book about how to stop harbouring resentments was based on more than twenty in-depth interviews as well as anecdotal elements from Schwarzenegger.

By delving into the experience of others, as Schwarzenegger so eloquently does, you’ll be able to process your own pain and resentments without feeling isolated or alone. Through wisdom and moving personal stories, this book is sure to inspire you.
In a similar vein to Schwarzenegger’s The Gift of Forgiveness, Forgiving What You Can’t Forget by Lysa TerKeurst offers another insight into the damage that resentment can do. This book will implore you to put an end to the pain you’re feeling by gracefully moving on from the person or situation that caused it. As far as TerKeurst is concerned, forgiveness is a key element to a peaceful life and successful future relationships.
With a search increase of 800% between 2019 and 2020, it looks like a surge of people have decided to bury the hatchet during the pandemic, choosing to focus on their own wellbeing instead.
Many self-help books have seen a jump in popularity this year. It’s certainly a sign of strength and resilience, that people have taken the time during the lockdowns, to figure out what might make them happier by looking inwards, reflecting and finding ways to support their mindsets. Books such as these ones have also provided a form of friendship and companionship to many, which has been a saving grace during such a challenging period.

]]>The deflagration unleashed a large fire in the medical facilities and it is being investigated whether it was caused by an electrical short circuit.
At least 60 patients died early this Sunday in an explosion caused by the explosion of oxygen cylinders at the Al Jatib hospital in southeast Baghdad , intended for coronavirus patients, a source from the Iraqi Interior Ministry informed Efe.
A source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry said on condition of anonymity that at least 24 people were killed in the explosion and indicated that the causes of deaths were “due to suffocation”, after the deflagration caused a large fire in the medical facilities. He noted that the number of deaths could increase in the next few hours.
According to the source, the explosion was caused by the explosion of oxygen cylinders inside the Al Jatib hospital, in southeastern Baghdad, a medical facility with a capacity of 120 beds that has been used exclusively for coronavirus patients.
For its part, the Iraqi state news agency INA said that, according to the first investigations, the fire could have been caused by a short circuit or by the explosion of oxygen cylinders in poor condition.
More than 20 firefighting teams managed to put out the flames of this “massive fire”, in the words of the Iraqi Civil Defense, which reported in a statement that they managed to rescue about 90 patients during the evacuation of the center.
The note adds that dozens of neighbors came to help the patients, most of whom were elderly and people who were connected to respirators. These incidents in Iraq are rare , despite the poor state of the medical infrastructure in a rebuilding country after decades of conflict that have seriously affected public services.
In this regard, the Iraqi public commission for Human Rights has asked the Government to take responsibility for this incident and has demanded the resignation of the Minister of Health, while recalling the deficiencies of the Iraqi health system, especially in the midst of a situation as exceptional as the pandemic.
For his part, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al Kazemi has ordered an “immediate investigation” into the explosion, according to a statement from his office.
Iraq is one of the Arab countries in the Middle East that has registered the most infections so far, more than 1.18 million, according to the World Health Organization, while the death toll rises to more than 15,000.

]]>At least three people have died this Saturday in the attack on an Iranian oil freighter, which caused a fire already under control on the ship. The ship is near the coastal city of Banias in northwestern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
The Syrian state news agency SANA has claimed that the attack was carried out by “a drone launched from Lebanese regional waters . ” The Observatory, for its part, has ruled out that the fire was caused by “a technical failure” and has also questioned that the attack was perpetrated by a drone (unmanned aircraft) launched from Lebanon.
Successive incidents
This unusual incident comes two days after Israel bombed targets in neighboring Syria in response to the firing of a missile that landed near Israel ‘s Dimona nuclear plant . The Tel Avid government considers that the presence in Syria of forces from Iran or its arch-enemy, as well as militiamen from its Lebanese rival, Hezbollah, represents a threat to its security.
This also happens in a context of successive incidents between Israel and Iran and a crossroads of accusations of attacks or sabotage after registering a series of explosions on freighters from both countries . The latest event occurred last week, when Iran blamed Israel for sabotage at its Natanz nuclear plant, amid negotiations to recover the 2015 nuclear deal signed by the 5 + 1 Group with Tehran, which Israel opposes for full.

]]>Turkey “harshly condemns” the White House decision and asks the US to look at its past before giving lessons.
Joe Biden has done this Saturday what so many of his predecessors never dared to do. The president of the United States has formally recognized as a “genocide” the systematic killings, disappearances and deportations of Armenians at the hands of the Turkish forces of the Ottoman Empire during the First World War and its subsequent years.
The decision comes a year after the Democrat publicly promised it to the Armenian-American community and will serve to reaffirm the commitment he made in the campaign to defend human rights . But his stance, which has no practical consequences, will also contribute to straining the relationship with Turkey , a key NATO ally, which has been quick to condemn the passage of the White House.
Biden called the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the day before to communicate directly his plans to recognize the genocide, always denied by Turkey, which disputes that there was a campaign to annihilate the Armenian people between 1915 and 1923. At that time, two million Armenians were deported and 1.5 million were killed .
Ankara outrage
It was the first call between the two leaders in the three months since the Democrat took power. “The American people honor all those Armenians who perished in the genocide that began today 106 years ago,” Biden said in a statement this Saturday, coinciding with the commemoration of those tragic events. “We affirm history. We do not do it to attribute blame but to ensure that what happened does not happen again ”.
The news has been welcomed by the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinya , who has described it as “a great step towards justice” , but has not been slow to arouse the indignation of the Ankara Government.
“We strongly condemn and reject the president’s statements , which only repeat the accusations of those whose only agenda is enmity towards our country,” Erdogan’s spokesman said. “We recommend that the president of the United States look at the past and present of his country.”
